AC3E researcher speaks about decarbonization in Chile at British institution

On June 12, Dr. Esteban Gil, research associate of the AC3E Electric Systems line, and researcher George Kerrigan gave a presentation entitled “Challenges in the Decarbonization of the Chilean Electricity Sector” and talked about their FONDEF project ID22I10341 at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) of the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK, which focuses on issues of sustainable development and public policy.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss the FONDEF project “Development of an interactive information platform (ecoenergy3e) based on a hybrid IO equilibrium model (IO-HE) of the electricity sector for the evaluation of the impact of transformations in the energy matrix,” led by Drs. Gil and Kerrigan.

The presentation was addressed to IDS researchers, academics, and students of the university’s Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), with the aim of presenting the Chilean experience in the energy transition and the impact of public policies in the electricity sector.

Chile faces several challenges to implement and reap the benefits of green energy production, such as managing the variability and uncertainty of renewable sources, improving infrastructure, strengthening regulations, and ensuring social acceptance and stakeholder participation. It is important to address these challenges from different perspectives to achieve the goals set for the decarbonization of the energy matrix and create a positive impact on the economy and society.
