Analyzing passenger flow behavior is a key factor for the design of rail service operational plans. The analysis establishes the operating model and defines train frequency and configuration, among other aspects.
To advance this analysis and project passenger flows, EFE Valparaíso and Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María’s Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E) are developing passenger load and event simulator SIMUTREN. The simulator will improve statistical passenger models, detect traffic profiles by station and help optimize the network.
The aim is to obtain a powerful tool that can recreate operational conditions in terms of passenger flows in specific situations. For example, how adding a station to the network or integrating bus transport affects operations.
SIMUTREN is a collaborative project, led by EFE Valparaíso and AC3E, fostering convergence of academia, industry, and society. By forming collaborative relationships, the project spawns technologies that address the challenges of the future.
The simulator uses discrete event analysis technology and stochastic modeling software.
InnovaChile and its I+D+i Colaborativo program, linked to development agency CORFO, provided $90 million, or 80% of the required investment, which was key to the project that will positively impact daily life in the region.
The link between EFE Valparaíso and the university is a highlight. It was established years ago through innovation projects.
