USM Academic Appointed Deputy Director of AC3E Research Center

Academic from the Department of Electronics at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and tenured researcher at the Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, AC3E, Héctor Ramírez, has assumed the deputy director position of the Center, where he will have an important role in the preparation and application for its next 10 years.

“I receive this appointment very happy, enthusiastic, with a lot of energy and a deep sense of responsibility, not only for what AC3E represents, but for its history and the upcoming process, where we conclude one stage and prepare another of consolidation of all the achievements made, maintaining our level of excellence, which is recognized in the national and international academic community, in industry and society,” highlighted the academic.

The link between Dr. Ramírez and AC3E began several years ago, under the direction of the current Rector of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Dr. Juan Yuz, with whom he carried out various research collaborations while he was a professor at l’Université de Franche-Comté and researcher at the FEMTO-ST research institute in Besanzon, France. During this time, the new deputy director made multiple visits to Chile to work with the Center’s research team.

In 2018, he joined as an academic at USM and associate researcher in the Control and Automation line. Then in 2022, he assumed as head of the same line, after the resignation of Dr. Juan Yuz, upon being elected Rector of the university.

“My history with AC3E is quite long. During all this time I was able to get to know the Center beyond its research dynamics. I saw how things were going in the right direction and that its structure and operation were similar to centers of this type abroad. Upon assuming as head, I became more and more involved, getting to know the team and its energy closely, in addition to all the talent and potential that exists in it,” he said.

Connection with Industry

One of the great objectives with which AC3E was born in 2014 is the connection between academia and industry, which in Dr. Ramírez’s opinion, has been fully achieved during these 10 years. The way the team is configured, the staff of engineers and professionals dedicated to dissemination, a significant percentage of people collaborating and who are not in academia, has been key to achieving this link.

“There are few stories of research centers that have managed to connect with industry like AC3E. This shows us that things are working well at the local level, so today our dream is to continue growing and strengthen the impact on the community, for which we will continue working to enhance those strengths and project ourselves towards a promising future,” he concluded.
