El jurado presidido por el Ministro de Educación, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, decidió otorgar el galardón al Dr. José Rodríguez Pérez.
El jurado resolvió, por unanimidad, otorgar, este viernes, el Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas 2014 al Dr. José Rodríguez Pérez, Rector e Ingeniero Civil Electricista de la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (1977) Doctor Ingeniero en Electricidad por la Universidad de Erlangen (Alemania, 1985).
Luego de analizar en profundidad los antecedentes y méritos de los candidatos al galardón, el jurado basó su decisión “en su nutrida producción de publicaciones científicas, lo que lo ha situado como el investigador chileno con mayor reconocimiento internacional en el área de la Ingeniería Eléctrica”, explicó el Ministro de Educación, Nicolás Eyzaguirre.
El secretario de Estado y presidente del jurado también destacó su trayectoria académica, “que se inició como sub-técnico, y llegó a doctorarse en Alemania. Asimismo, el jurado destacó su contribución a la formación de capital humano avanzado. Es destacable que su labor científica la realizó en paralelo a su función de Rector”, relevó el ministro Eyzaguirre.
El galardonado es un activo investigador y ha participado desde el año 1987 en numerosos proyectos FONDECYT; en un Núcleo Milenio (2005-2008) y en el Centro Basal de Excelencia (2009-2012). Ha tenido reconocimiento nacional e internacional en el área de la Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica, y es el único chileno incluido por Thompson Reuters en su listado Highly Cited Research 2014, que distingue a los investigadores más influyentes del mundo en el ámbito científico.
En su trayectoria ha recibido diversos reconocimientos por su trabajo de investigación, entre ellos ser Fellow Member del Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) de Estados Unidos. También ha sido director de numerosos proyectos Fondecyt, Fondef y Director alterno de un Grupo Milenio. Ha sido miembro del grupo de estudios de ingeniería en la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (Conicyt), miembro del Consejo Asesor Presidencial de Educación Superior, Director de la Asociación de Empresas de Valparaíso, ASIVA y del directorio de Universia.
El jurado estuvo constituido por el Ministro de Educación, Nicolás Eyzaguirre; Ennio Vivaldi, Rector de la U. de Chile; Sergio Lavanchy, Rector de la U. de Concepción, en representación del CRUCH y María Elena Boisier, Presidenta (S) de CONICYT. Excusó su participación el último galardonado en esta disciplina, Ricardo Uauy, por encontrarse fuera del país.
El Premio Nacional que concede el Ministerio de Educación es el máximo reconocimiento que otorga el Estado de Chile a quienes han destacado por su creatividad, trayectoria profesional y aporte relevante al desarrollo de las ciencias, las humanidades y las artes del país.
Al respecto, José Rodríguez se manifestó muy emocionado por el Premio, señalando que “estoy muy agradecido por la decisión del jurado. Creo que es un gran reconocimiento para la Universidad y para el Departamento de Electrónica, donde he desarrollado toda esta labor de investigación en el área de Electrónica de Potencia, que es el área en la que he trabajado toda mi vida, que me apasiona y a la que he dedicado muchos años y desvelos”.
Del mismo modo, reconoció a dos instituciones: “a la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, mi Alma Mater, que es mi empleadora y quien me ha entregado todo su respaldo y a Conicyt, porque todos los proyectos e iniciativas que he emprendido, las he realizado gracias a ellos. Si no existiera dicha institución, muy probablemente no habría obtenido este galardón”.

This Friday the jury resolved by unanimity to give the National Applied Science and Technology Award 2014 to Dr. José Rodríguez Pérez, Principal and Electric Civil Engineer from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (1977) and Doctor in Electricity Engineering in Universidad de Erlangen (Germany, 1985).
After deeply analyzing the candidate’s backgrounds and merits, the jury bases their decision “in his high production of scientific publications, that has established him as the Chilean researcher with most international recognition in the electrical engineering field”, explained the Minister of Education, Nicolás Eyzaguirre.
The state secretary and president of the jury also highlighted his academic background, “that started as sub-technician and managed to receive his doctorate in Germany. Furthermore, the jury highlighted his contribution to the training of advanced human capital. It’s also noteworthy that his scientific career was made during his time as Principal”, said Minister Eyzaguirre.
The award-winner is an active researcher and has participated since 1987 in various FONDECYT projects; in Núcleo Milenio (2005-2008) and in Centro Basal de Excelencia (2009-2012). He has received national and international recognitions in the fields of electric and electronics engineering and is the only Chilean that has been included by Thomson Reuters in their Highly Cited Research 2014 list that distinguishes the most influent researchers in the world, in the scientific field.
Throughout his life he has received numerous acknowledgments for his efforts as a researcher, among which is being Fellow Member in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) from USA. He has also been Director in numerous FONDECYT, FONDEF projects and Alternate Director in Grupo Milenio. He has been member in engineering study groups for the National Commission for Scientific and Technologic Research (CONICYT), member of the Higher Education Presidential Advisory Council, Director of the Valparaiso Company Association (ASIVA) and of the Universia directory.
The jury was formed by the Minister of Education, Nicolás Eyzaguirre; Ennio Vivaldi, Principal of Universidad de Chile; Sergio Lavanchy, Principal of Universidad de Concepción, representing CRUCH and María Elena Boisier, CONICYT president. Ricardo Uauy, the last award-winner, regretted he could not participate, since he was abroad.
The national award granted by Ministry of Education is the highest recognition given by the Chilean State, to those who have stood out for their creativity, professional background and relevant contribution to the development of national science, humanities and arts.
José Rodriguez was very excited for having won this award, pointing out that “I am very thankful for the jury’s decision. I think this is a great acknowledgement for the University and the Electronics Department, where I have developed this research effort in the fields of power electronics, which is the field that I have worked in all my life, where my passion is and to which I have dedicated many years”.
Similarly, he acknowledged 2 institutions: “to Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, my Alma Mater, my employer, which has given me all their support and to CONICYT, because every project and endeavor that I have undertaken, I have done thanks to them. If said institute did not exist, I would probably not have won this award”.
