Biomedical Systems

The incorporation of technology into medicine has revolutionized diagnoses, facilitated treatments and helped discover diseases, among many other benefits that impact both the daily work of doctors and the quality of life of people.

Engineering is nourished with information from medicine, so it can provide innovative solutions to strengthen health services and accelerate patient waiting times in a system that often faces much more demand than it can meet.

To contribute to the development of this interdisciplinary link, AC3E’s Biomedical Systems research line covers a wide range of research topics, including portable monitoring systems, biomedical signal processing, physiological modeling, computational neuroscience, neuropsychology and biorobotics, all applied primarily to vision, voice and hearing issues.

This interdisciplinary group is made up of researchers from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, health professionals and researchers from the Schools of Biomedical Engineering of Universidad de Concepción and Universidad de Valparaíso, and the latter’s Interdisciplinary Center of Neurosciences.

The team advances collaborative projects with internationally renowned centers such as Harvard Medical School (USA), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone (France), and University of Manchester (UK). In addition, it participates in joint projects financed through grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), MIT-Chile, the Institut National de Recherché en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherché (ANR), among others. The group has been particularly active in technology transfer through patents and CORFO and FONDEF projects.

Its work has focused on signals, sensors and biomedical devices, neuroengineering and rehabilitation engineering, and modeling of physiological systems, generating an important contribution to the development of health technologies in our country.
